Health Information Management

The hospital and co-workers have the responsibility to safeguard clinical records of patients and to see that records are available only to properly authorized individuals or bodies.

The medical record is a privileged communication, confidential information for use by the attending doctor, hospital, and patient. Release to others may be made only upon receipt of properly signed permit or legal process.

The hospital complies with the patient rights provisions of the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). Among other rights, patients decide whether to list their names in the directory of inpatients in the lobby of the hospital.

The Health Information Management representative of the hospital reviews privacy rights and hospital confidentiality policies with patients of legal age who are not incapacitated.
